Review of "Obsessed"
"So so...oh oh oh oh oh...so so... ohhhhhhhhhhhh"
Not quite the sweetly touching lyrics we expected of Mariah in her new single, "Obsessed". Here we see another Mariah: depending on your point of view, she could be feistier, or she could be succumbing to the pressures of commercialism.
The song is an uptempo summer track aimed at being her #19 No.1 hit. It certainly has the makings of a smash hit, going by how well songs like "Umbrella" are faring on the US Billboard charts.
As a longtime Mariah fan who's still hooked on her older hits like "Fantasy" and "My All", this song represents a step backward, not forward. In order to adapt herself to the new generation of talentless, commercial so-called singers, Mariah has come up with a formulaic new single that does not capture any of the vocal prowess or magic that used to be in her songs.
While certainly a whole lot more catchy than songs from her preceding album, "E=MC2", Mariah barely sings in this song. It's obvious that this song would be perfect for all them deejays out there due to its catchy hook and the initial sentence that tells... "I was like, why are you so obsessed with me?"
The lyrics itself are biting and suggestively aimed at Eminem, in an answer to his song where he resorted to name-calling on Mariah and her husband, Nick Cannon. Controversial is the only word we can use to describe the lyrics here, and maybe also the song.
It's a different Mariah we see here, one who's edging further away from the classic Mariah who ruled the 90s airwaves. Whether this change is in a positive or negative direction remains to be seen, at least until "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel" is released on 25 August.

MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL
If you don't already know yet, Mariah's lead single from her 12th studio album, entitled "Obsessed", is on Chicago's B96 radio station today at 3pm CT (22.00 Italian time). Here is the cover for the CD single:
That's not even the best news- official press release states that Mariah's new album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel, will be out on 25 August 2009! That's some weeks ahead of the previously rumoured mid or late September release date. The second single might be "H.A.T.E.U.". Mariah has said via her Twitter account that she tried to do something for people who loved her "Butterfly" album or even older albums. The new album is executive produced by LA Reid, and includes collaborations with Timbaland, The Dream, Tricky Stewart, Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox.

Mariah Carey has confirmed on her Twitter account that the first single from her 12th album "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel" will be named "Obsessed". She revealed also that it will hit US radio stations on 16 June 2009, on Tuesday.

FLORIDA: Day 1 (Of bumpy rides and grumpy gripes)
Our flight to Miami International Airport in Florida was scheduled to depart at 11.30 from Rome Fiumicino's new Terminal 5. Less than what we expected, Terminal 5 was only a terminal for flights to the US, and was extremely basic in terms of appearance and facilities. After going through customs and baggage check, we had to take an escalator to lead us back to the old Terminal 3! So much for having a new terminal.
Upon our arrival, we saw also that our American Airlines (AA) flight had been delayed for an hour and a half. Considering that our connecting flight was originally only a mere 3 hours after landing in Chicago O'Hare, this unexpected delay meant that the time was shortened to 1 and a half. We were already exasperated with AA at this point, but there's more to come.
I've never had a ride as bumpy, turbulent and cold as the one on AA. The Boeing 767-300 aircraft was old enough that other airlines would have deemed it obsolete. Inside, it was worse. Old, cramped seats that gave an immediate feeling of claustrophobia. Air stewardesses that weren't very polite at all. The only redemption was the food. Prepared in Italy, we were served tortellini with cheese and an American mushroom pizza for the 11 hour long flight.
If we could only eat in peace. The plane experienced so many moments of turbulence that my stomach became upset. Believe me, one time I even saw a plane passing just under the right wing of the plane! Any nearer and it would have been a bonafide crash.
The ridiculous episode happened in Chicago O'Hare. Isn't it amazing that for transit passengers, a separate check-in for the connecting flight is required? I've never experienced a more complicated process ever: 1. passport control, 2. baggage check, 3. check-in, 4. another baggage check!
We already lost our flight after all these onerous procedures. Our plane arrived at 16.30, our connecting flight to Miami was 17.30 but we only finished all the procedures by 17.45.
Fortunately there was a next flight at 20.30. We would arrive much too late with this flight, but being out of choice, we took it.
After arriving in Miami, where a lot of South American workers couldn't give a damn to work (much less to help you), we had to find the shuttle bus to get to Alamo, where we wanted to rent a car. The driver demanded a tip to get our luggage for us up and down the shuttle bus, and the customer service people in Alamo wanted to cheat us with more car insurance or whatever.
We got a red Pontiac G5, and took almost an hour and a half to find Best Western On the Bay in North Bay Village. It wasn't in the city area, and was 15 kms from the airport. Our energy and motivation were already sapped and I was having double vision from the dryness of my contact lens. But we managed to find the hotel in the end.
Best Western On the Bay was a nice hotel, but we were so tired we went to sleep immediately.
Tomorrow it's time for the beach, don't know what to expect, but hope at least that turns out to be good!
